This runner comes from the Herat region of western Afghanistan, where pinning down the exact tribal origin of any woven piece is rarely straightforward. The Baloch and the many communities who lived and wove alongside them shared the same land, materials and design traditions for generations, and their rugs carry that shared history.

The Mushwani are a Pashtun origin tribe spread across Herat and Badghis provinces, who absorbed much of their weaving tradition from the Baloch neighbours they lived beside. That inheritance shows here: the deep madder-red field, the kilim ends in red and indigo, and a column of stepped diamond medallions in indigo and navy running down the centre, with ivory appearing as a quiet accent throughout.

Fifty years have done what they should. The wool has settled into an even, low pile and the colours have reached a depth that only age and natural dye together can produce.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Our carpets are made to be lived with, not just looked at. But like any heirloom, they thrive with care.

  • Shake, don’t scrub. For regular upkeep, gently shake or vacuum your carpet to lift out dust and dirt. Avoid using a beater brush.
  • Spot clean with love. If there's a spill, blot gently with a clean cloth. Use mild detergent and cold water, no harsh chemicals.
  • Rotate occasionally. Turning your carpet every few months helps it wear evenly, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Let it breathe. Wool loves air. Every now and then, let your carpet soak in sunlight and fresh air, just not too long to avoid fading.
  • Professional help for deep cleaning. Once in a while, a gentle hand wash or expert cleaning will restore its natural glow.

These carpets are built with resilience, just like the people who’ve woven them for generations. Treat them kindly, and they’ll walk with you for years to come.
